National Museum, Art & History Museum, Stari Grad, Belgrade

This is where the Miroslav Gospel from 1180 is kept — the oldest surviving Serbian book, two floors below a Van Gogh.

Three floors: archaeology from prehistory to Rome on the ground floor, medieval Serbia on the first, European and Serbian painting on the second. The building was shut for fifteen years and reopened in 2018, so the display is new even though the collection is nearly two centuries old.

Why it's worth it

It is the only collection in the country that takes you from Vinca figurines to Cezanne in ninety minutes.
